Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Mining, Energy and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 1.83%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Le Groupe Jean Coutu PJC Inc (TO:PJCa), which rose 2.85% or 0.54 points to trade at 19.50 at the close. Meanwhile, Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp (TO:AQN) added 2.80% or 0.32 points to end at 11.75 and Descartes Systems Group Inc (TO:DSG) was up 2.47% or 0.62 points to 25.71 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM), which fell 12.79% or 0.39 points to trade at 2.66 at the close. Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP) declined 11.29% or 0.21 points to end at 1.65 and WestJet Airlines Ltd . (TO:WJA) was down 11.07% or 2.07 points to 16.63.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 877 to 405 and 194 ended unchanged.
Shares in Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp (TO:AQN) rose to all time highs; gaining 2.80% or 0.32 to 11.75. Shares in WestJet Airlines Ltd. (TO:WJA) fell to 3-years lows; losing 11.07% or 2.07 to 16.63.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.88% to 25.56.
Gold for April delivery was up 0.12% or 1.30 to $1129.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 5.53% or 1.75 to hit $29.87 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 4.70% or 1.61 to trade at $32.63 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.59% to 0.7128, while CAD/EUR fell 0.85% to 0.6529.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.17% at 98.88.
