Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Industrials and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.06% to hit a new 52-week high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canadian Pacific Railway Limited (TO:CP), which rose 5.52% or 10.26 points to trade at 196.26 at the close. Descartes Systems Group Inc (TO:DSG) added 4.77% or 1.21 points to end at 26.60 and Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO:VRX) was up 4.63% or 1.42 points to 32.10 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR), which lost 9.26% or 2.01 points to trade at 19.70 in late trade. Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) declined 9.16% or 0.60 points to end at 5.95 and Kirkland Lake Gold Inc . (TO:KGI) shed 8.62% or 0.98 points to 10.39.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 745 to 445 and 109 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.12% to 12.55.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 1.33% or 17.70 to $1314.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.46% or 0.21 to hit $45.66 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.99% or 0.46 to trade at $47.12 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.29% to 0.7657, while CAD/EUR fell 0.23% to 0.6952.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.10% at 97.16.
