Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Technology and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.04%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.24%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 0.96% or 0.92 points to trade at 96.67 at the close. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) added 0.51% or 0.55 points to end at 108.34 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) was up 0.43% or 0.15 points to 35.08 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 0.73% or 0.61 points to trade at 82.83 in late trade. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) declined 0.72% or 0.50 points to end at 68.80 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 0.67% or 0.44 points to 65.39.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which rose 21.83% to 22.16, Microchip Technology Incorporated (NASDAQ:MCHP) which was up 7.06% to settle at 60.63 and Jacobs Engineering Group Inc (NYSE:JEC) which gained 4.08% to close at 55.57.
The worst performers were Scripps Networks Interactive Inc (NASDAQ:SNI) which was down 7.10% to 61.47 in late trade, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which lost 6.76% to settle at 68.98 and Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was down 6.28% to 24.01 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which rose 23.13% to 0.3300, Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which was up 21.83% to settle at 22.16 and Resonant Inc (NASDAQ:RESN) which gained 21.03% to close at 6.130.
The worst performers were Connecture Inc (NASDAQ:CNXR) which was down 30.71% to 1.760 in late trade, Reliv International Inc (NASDAQ:RELV) which lost 24.16% to settle at 0.7660 and Impax Laboratories Inc (NASDAQ:IPXL) which was down 23.41% to 23.43 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1733 to 1512 and 43 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1408 rose and 1127 declined, while 82 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.13% to 11.63.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.31% or 4.20 to $1345.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.60% or 0.26 to hit $42.76 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.86% or 0.39 to trade at $45.00 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.24% to 1.1113, while USD/JPY fell 0.53% to 101.91.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.21% at 96.09.
