Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Financials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.18% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.34%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.45%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 1.24% or 2.83 points to trade at 231.38 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 1.23% or 0.61 points to end at 50.36 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 0.96% or 0.33 points to 34.72 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.47% or 1.28 points to trade at 50.57 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 0.72% or 0.94 points to end at 128.74 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 0.68% or 0.20 points to 29.33.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Autodesk Inc (NASDAQ:ADSK) which rose 7.22% to 76.32, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was up 4.54% to settle at 124.57 and BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which gained 4.45% to close at 39.16.
The worst performers were Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which was down 7.58% to 366.25 in late trade, Interpublic Group of Companies Inc (NYSE:IPG) which lost 3.00% to settle at 23.28 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) which was down 2.47% to 50.57 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Neovasc Inc (NASDAQ:NVCN) which rose 70.42% to 2.420, RXI Pharmaceuticals Corp (NASDAQ:RXII) which was up 51.85% to settle at 2.0500 and Immune Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:IMNP) which gained 44.61% to close at 0.2577.
The worst performers were Real Goods Solar Inc (NASDAQ:RGSE) which was down 23.53% to 0.3900 in late trade, Perfumania Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PERF) which lost 15.91% to settle at 1.850 and Cerecor Inc (NASDAQ:CERC) which was down 15.79% to 1.280 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2219 to 940 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1655 rose and 828 declined, while 149 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.97% to 11.78 a new 3-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was down 0.44% or 5.20 to $1171.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 2.07% or 1.07 to hit $50.72 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 2.26% or 1.24 to trade at $53.70 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.41% to 1.0720, while USD/JPY rose 0.15% to 114.03.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.34% at 100.50.
