UPDATE 1-Baseball-Highlights of Tuesday's MLB games

(Adds later games)
July 28 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's games
in Major League Baseball.
- - -
Mets, 4, Padres 0
Rookie right-handed pitcher Noah Syndergaard retired the
first 18 batters he faced and ended up allowing three hits over
eight shutout innings as the New York Mets beat the San Diego
Padres 4-0 at Citi Field.
The win was the third straight for the Mets (52-48) while
the Padres (47-53) had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Syndergaard (5-5) struck out nine in lowering his ERA to
2.70. He walked one batter or fewer in eight of his 13 career
starts, including zero on Tuesday, and threw eight innings in
three of his last five starts.
- - -
Phillies 3, Blue Jays 2
Shortstop Andres Blanco drove in the go-ahead run in the
fifth inning and left-hander Adam Morgan pitched six innings as
the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2.
It was the fifth win in a row for the Phillies (38-63) and
the second loss in a row for the Blue Jays (50-51), who got a
home run from second baseman Devon Travis before Travis left the
game in the third inning with a shoulder injury.
Ken Giles entered in the ninth for Philadelphia because
Jonathan Papelbon had been traded to the Washington Nationals
earlier in the evening.
- - -
Marlins 4, Nationals 1
Jose Fernandez improved his career home record to 15-0,
leading the Miami Marlins past the Washington Nationals 4-1 at
Marlins Park.
Fernandez (4-0) struck out five batters and allowed four
hits and one run in six innings. He pitched around four walks,
which tied his career high.
In 23 career home starts, Fernandez has a 1.19 ERA. His
streak of unbeaten home starts to start a career is the longest
in the majors since 1914. His mark of 15 consecutive home wins
to start a career is one short of the Major League record.
- - -
Orioles 7, Braves 3
Chris Davis homered twice and drove in five runs -- all in
the first two innings -- as the Baltimore Orioles extended their
winning streak to four games with a 7-3 victory over the Atlanta
Braves in an interleague match-up.
Davis belted a three-run homer in the first that gave the
Orioles (50-49) the lead for good and followed that with a
two-run shot the following inning, both off Braves starter Julio
Teheran. That was the 10th multi-homer game of Davis' career and
the third this season.
- - -
White Sox 9, Red Sox 4
Jose Abreu had an overturned replay review for a two-run
home run after center fielder Mookie Betts tumbled into Boston's
bullpen and the ball fell out of his glove, helping the Chicago
White Sox spoil Pedro Martinez's number-retirement night with a
9-4 win over the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Left fielder Melky Cabrera went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a
triple and single, first baseman Abreu had three hits, and
catcher Geovany Soto added a solo homer and reached base five
times with three walks for the suddenly surging White Sox, who
won their sixth straight.
- - -
Rays 10, Tigers 2
The Tampa Bay Rays won back-to-back games swinging the bats,
with an unlikely spark in backup catcher Curt Casali, who hit
two home runs for the second straight night in Tuesday's 10-2
win over the Detroit Tigers at Tropicana Field.
Casali, just the second player in Rays history with
back-to-back multi-home run games, had six home runs in a span
of 19 at-bats, with more bombs in that span than all Rays
catchers totaled last season.
- - -
Royals 2, Indians 1
Eric Hosmer's home run with two outs in the top of the ninth
inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the streaking Kansas City
Royals to a 2-1 win over the fading Cleveland Indians on Tuesday
night at Progressive Field.
The Royals won four in a row while the Indians lost six in a
row and were outscored 37-10 in those games.
- - -
Reds 4, Cardinals 0
Reds frst baseman Joey Votto busted up a scoreless tie in
the top of the sixth inning with a three-run homer, giving
starter Mike Leake all the support required to post a 4-0
victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
- - -
Rockies 7, Cubs 2
DJ LeMahieu went 3-for-4 and scored twice, leading the
Colorado Rockies to a 7-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
LeMahieu, who also drew a walk, kicked off a four-run first
with an RBI double, and the Rockies jumped to a quick lead never
trailed on the way to their second win in three games.
- - -
Pirates 8, Twins 7
Kang Jung-ho's solo homer in the top of the ninth inning
lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-7 win over the Minnesota
Twins at Target Field.
Kang's blast, which travelled 411 feet into the second deck
in left field, came off All Star closer Glen Perkins, who
entered with the game tied in the ninth following a crazy eighth
inning where each team scored four runs.
- - -
Astros 10, Angels 5
Second baseman Jose Altuve recorded a career-high five RBIs
as the Houston Astros erased a three-run deficit en route to a
10-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night at Minute
Maid Park.
Altuve posted run-scoring hits in three consecutive at-bats
and finished 3-for-5 with a double and a run. He hit a
game-tying single in the second inning, a go-ahead single in the
fourth and a two-run double in the sixth inning that provided
the Astros (56-45) some needed insurance.
- - -
Yankees 21, Rangers 5
Buoyed by a record 11-run second inning, the Yankees
pummeled the Texas Rangers 21-5 on Tuesday at Globe Life Park.
New York (57-42) are 4-1 on their 10-game road trip, having
scored 42 runs during their four-game winning streak.
They racked up 19 hits against Texas, but perhaps more
impressive was the outing of rookie Diego Moreno out of Triple-A
and the bullpen. The 28-year-old right-hander, called up before
the game, came on with two outs in the first inning and did not
give up a hit in 5 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first
Major League win.
- - -
Brewers 5, Giants 2
Right fielder Gerardo Parra had a single, double and triple,
and right-hander Wily Peralta came off the disabled list to win
for the first time since May 6, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to
a 5-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.
First baseman Adam Lind returned to the Milwaukee lineup
after a two-game absence to drive in two runs, helping the
Brewers end the Giants' seven-game winning streak. Milwaukee
also beat San Francisco for the first time in eight tries dating
back to last season.
- - -
Athletics 2, Dodgers 0
Oakland Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray tossed a two-hit
shutout, leading the A's to a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles
Dodgers on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.
Right fielder Josh Reddick homered as the A's (45-56)
snapped a four-game losing streak. The Dodgers (56-45) have lost
three in a row.
- - -
Diamondbacks 8, Mariners 4
The Arizona Diamondbacks' David Peralta, Chris Owings, Ender
Inciarte and Nick Ahmed each drove in a pair of runs to lead the
Diamondbacks to an 8-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on
Tuesday.
It was Arizona's fifth win in six games.
Starting pitcher Zack Godley (2-0) earned the win in his
second career start despite giving up a pair of mammoth home
runs to Seattle designated hitter Nelson Cruz (440 feet) and
catcher Mike Zunino (452). Godley allowed three runs off seven
hits over six innings.
