Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.41% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.48%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.09%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 2.55% or 2.69 points to trade at 108.13 at the close. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) fell 0.65% or 0.47 points to end at 71.47 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was down 0.79% or 0.53 points to 66.53 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which lost 2.73% or 2.79 points to trade at 99.46 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 2.40% or 4.11 points to end at 166.95 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) shed 2.38% or 2.08 points to 85.21.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which rose 2.81% to 39.86, Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) which was up 2.55% to settle at 108.13 and Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SWKS) which gained 1.49% to close at 69.36.
The worst performers were Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 8.44% to 10.14 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 8.39% to settle at 7.375 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which was down 8.35% to 10.98 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Northwest Biotherapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:NWBO) which rose 42.61% to 0.570, Nymox Pharmaceutical Corp (NASDAQ:NYMX) which was up 30.94% to settle at 3.640 and Reading International B Inc (NASDAQ:RDIB) which gained 27.96% to close at 20.730.
The worst performers were Applied Genetic (NASDAQ:AGTC) which was down 31.77% to 9.00 in late trade, Tantech Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:TANH) which lost 21.65% to settle at 2.28 and DASAN Zhone Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:DZSI) which was down 17.61% to 1.170 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2874 to 333 and 52 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2098 fell and 443 advanced, while 89 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 18.47% to 17.96 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.30% or 3.95 to $1321.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 2.74% or 1.27 to hit $45.02 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 2.40% or 1.16 to trade at $47.16 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.14% to 1.1219, while USD/JPY rose 0.72% to 102.59.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.45% at 95.55.
