Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Utilities, Healthcare and Energy sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.17%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Bellatrix Exploration Ltd (TO:BXE), which rose 12.80% or 0.27 points to trade at 2.38 at the close. Meanwhile, Pengrowth Energy Corporation (TO:PGF) added 8.71% or 0.12 points to end at 1.44 and Torex Gold Resources Inc . (TO:TXG) was up 8.00% or 0.100 points to 1.350 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Interfor Corp (TO:IFP), which fell 4.29% or 0.52 points to trade at 11.61 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) declined 4.06% or 0.23 points to end at 5.44 and Stantec Inc. (TO:STN) was down 3.59% or 1.13 points to 30.37.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 708 to 651 and 197 ended unchanged.
Shares in Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) fell to 5-year lows; falling 4.06% or 0.23 to 5.44.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.48% to 21.54.
Gold for December delivery was up 1.10% or 12.30 to $1131.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.68% or 0.32 to hit $46.83 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 1.14% or 0.56 to trade at $49.19 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.04% to 0.7589, while CAD/EUR fell 1.22% to 0.6640.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.94% at 94.60.
