Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Utilities, Consumer Services and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Oil & Gas and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.04%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 0.78% or 0.57 points to trade at 73.35 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 0.66% or 1.01 points to end at 153.89 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was up 0.52% or 0.45 points to 87.55 in late trade.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 0.93% or 0.86 points to trade at 91.39 in late trade. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 0.80% or 1.23 points to end at 153.01 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 0.71% or 0.45 points to 62.61.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which rose 3.17% to 13.00, Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which was up 3.09% to settle at 23.05 and Kohl’s Corporation (NYSE:KSS) which gained 2.73% to close at 39.87.
The worst performers were Crown Castle International (NYSE:CCI) which was down 4.24% to 96.81 in late trade, BlackRock Inc (NYSE:BLK) which lost 3.13% to settle at 424.63 and Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA) which was down 2.98% to 253.94 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sevcon Inc (NASDAQ:SEV) which rose 59.78% to 21.73, Crossroads Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CRDS) which was up 48.10% to settle at 2.9324 and Soligenix Inc (NASDAQ:SNGX) which gained 36.23% to close at 2.8200.
The worst performers were Repros Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RPRX) which was down 33.49% to 0.39 in late trade, The Bon-Ton Stores Inc (NASDAQ:BONT) which lost 18.78% to settle at 0.640 and Monster Digital Inc (NASDAQ:MSDI) which was down 16.61% to 0.82 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1727 to 1372 and 147 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1283 rose and 1178 declined, while 162 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.79% to 9.87.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.46% or 5.66 to $1233.16 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.20% or 0.56 to hit $45.98 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.04% or 0.51 to trade at $48.40 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.10% to 1.1481, while USD/JPY rose 0.06% to 112.61.
The US Dollar Index Futures was unchanged 0.00% at 94.90.
