U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 2.39%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 2.39% to hit a new 3-months low, while the S&P 500 index lost 2.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 2.74%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (N:HD), which fell 0.33% or 0.39 points to trade at 119.23 at the close. Meanwhile, American Express Company (N:AXP) fell 0.60% or 0.38 points to end at 62.91 and Coca-Cola Company (N:KO) was down 0.91% or 0.38 points to 41.50 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Intel Corporation (O:INTC), which fell 9.10% or 2.98 points to trade at 29.76 at the close. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (N:DD) declined 5.77% or 3.31 points to end at 54.09 and Walt Disney Company (N:DIS) was down 5.26% or 5.21 points to 93.90.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wynn Resorts Limited (O:WYNN) which rose 13.34% to 58.37, AbbVie Inc (N:ABBV) which was up 5.10% to settle at 57.340 and General Growth Properties Inc (N:GGP) which gained 4.77% to close at 27.03.

The worst performers were Williams Companies Inc (N:WMB) which was down 11.97% to 16.10 in late trade, CONSOL Energy Inc (N:CNX) which lost 11.21% to settle at 4.99 and Marathon Oil Corporation (N:MRO) which was down 10.25% to 8.14 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Code Rebel Corp (O:CDRB) which rose 68.66% to 3.66, Apricus Biosciences Inc (O:APRI) which was up 60.53% to settle at 1.300 and Sfx Enterta (O:SFXE) which gained 57.20% to close at 0.12.

The worst performers were Sarepta Therapeutics Inc (O:SRPT) which was down 54.85% to 14.280 in late trade, Ultrapetrol Ltd (O:ULTR) which lost 35.42% to settle at 0.062 and Globus Maritime Ltd (O:GLBS) which was down 30.77% to 0.09 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2789 to 636 and 3 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2206 fell and 463 advanced, while 31 ended unchanged.

Shares in CONSOL Energy Inc (N:CNX) fell to all time lows; falling 11.21% or 0.63 to 4.99. Shares in Marathon Oil Corporation (N:MRO) fell to 5-year lows; down 10.25% or 0.93 to 8.14. Shares in Ultrapetrol Ltd (O:ULTR) fell to all time lows; falling 35.42% or 0.034 to 0.062. Shares in Globus Maritime Ltd (O:GLBS) fell to all time lows; losing 30.77% or 0.04 to 0.09.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 12.69% to 26.99.

Gold for February delivery was up 1.45% or 15.60 to $1089.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 4.79% or 1.50 to hit $29.70 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 5.38% or 1.66 to trade at $29.22 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.44% to 1.0913, while USD/JPY fell 0.86% to 117.05.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.11% at 99.00.
