Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Energy, Utilities and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM), which rose 6.77% or 1.89 points to trade at 29.81 at the close. Stelco Holdings Inc (TSX:STLC) added 6.57% or 3.45 points to end at 55.99 and Algoma Steel Group Inc (TSX:ASTL) was up 6.10% or 0.63 points to 10.96 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Baytex Energy Corp (TSX:BTE), which lost 9.52% or 0.56 points to trade at 5.28 in late trade. Bank of Nova Scotia (TSX:BNS) declined 5.54% or 3.96 points to end at 67.57 and Africa Oil Corp (TSX:AOI) shed 4.14% or 0.12 points to 2.78.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 516 to 441 and 121 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.82% to 12.44.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.51% or 9.35 to $1,834.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 1.53% or 1.16 to hit $76.84 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 1.37% or 1.12 to trade at $83.16 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.49% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.17% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.28% at 104.92.
