Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Financials, Energy and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.91% to hit a new 1-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG), which rose 33.89% or 2.03 points to trade at 8.02 at the close. Toromont Industries Ltd . (TO:TIH) added 6.76% or 3.17 points to end at 50.09 and Le Groupe Jean Coutu PJC Inc (TO:PJCa) was up 5.47% or 1.21 points to 23.32 in late trade.
Biggest losers included New Gold Inc . (TO:NGD), which lost 8.67% or 0.360 points to trade at 3.790 in late trade. Lundin Mining Corporation (TO:LUN) declined 6.78% or 0.510 points to end at 7.010 and Goldcorp Inc. (TO:G) shed 4.77% or 0.94 points to 18.78.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 790 to 370 and 120 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.21% to 12.63.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.12% or 1.55 to $1265.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.75% or 0.37 to hit $49.25 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.63% or 0.33 to trade at $52.08 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.04% to 0.7340, while CAD/EUR rose 0.22% to 0.6749.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.14% at 98.99.
