Investing.com – Japan equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Transportation Equipment, Electrical/Machinery and Pharmaceutical Industry sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 gained 1.80% to hit a new 5-year high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Hitachi Zosen Corp. (TYO:7004), which rose 5.75% or 50.00 points to trade at 919.00 at the close. SoftBank Group Corp. (TYO:9984) added 5.25% or 315.00 points to end at 6,310.00 and Toyota Motor Corp (TYO:7203) was up 5.05% or 104.50 points to 2,173.50 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. (TYO:9532), which lost 2.35% or 54.00 points to trade at 2,240.00 in late trade. Eisai Co., Ltd. (TYO:4523) declined 2.22% or 240.00 points to end at 10,555.00 and Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (TYO:3863) shed 1.64% or 21.00 points to 1,257.00.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1957 to 1626 and 255 ended unchanged on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was down 4.82% to 20.55.
In commodities trading, Crude oil for July delivery was up 0.80% or 0.54 to $67.66 a barrel. Meanwhile, Brent oil for delivery in August rose 1.09% or 0.78 to hit $72.62 a barrel, while the August Gold Futures contract rose 0.44% or 8.75 to trade at $1,978.45 a troy ounce.
USD/JPY was down 0.07% to 139.51, while EUR/JPY rose 0.35% to 150.70.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.39% at 102.82.
