Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.88%, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.97%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 2.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 5.02% or 13.50 points to trade at 282.19 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 4.65% or 5.93 points to end at 133.44 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 3.70% or 3.55 points to 99.40 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 1.27% or 1.92 points to trade at 149.84 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 points to end at 131.98 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) gained 0.10% or 0.24 points to 236.94.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which rose 39.85% to 276.61, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was up 9.29% to settle at 245.20 and Marathon Petroleum Corp (NYSE:MPC) which gained 7.80% to close at 100.09.
The worst performers were VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which was down 6.87% to 32.66 in late trade, Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) which lost 1.27% to settle at 149.84 and Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) which was down 1.17% to 118.93 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were PepGen Ltd (NASDAQ:PEPG) which rose 110.19% to 10.93, Acumen Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ABOS) which was up 103.83% to settle at 9.58 and Prothena Corporation plc (NASDAQ:PRTA) which gained 87.52% to close at 58.00.
The worst performers were PhaseBio Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:PHAS) which was down 66.18% to 0.26 in late trade, Mind Medicine (MindMed) Inc (NASDAQ:MNMD) which lost 47.06% to settle at 3.24 and Nano Labs Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:NA) which was down 33.96% to 2.10 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2798 to 396 and 112 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 3062 rose and 786 declined, while 211 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.39% to 30.19.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.93% or 31.55 to $1,667.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 4.38% or 3.44 to hit $81.94 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 3.52% or 2.99 to trade at $87.86 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.45% to 0.97, while USD/JPY fell 0.44% to 144.13.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.20% at 112.68.
