Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Oil & Gas and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.71% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.10%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 0.84% or 1.19 points to trade at 143.35 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 0.54% or 1.09 points to end at 201.55 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 0.49% or 0.69 points to 142.13 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 3.80% or 13.88 points to trade at 351.65 in late trade. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 2.85% or 3.12 points to end at 106.24 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) shed 1.53% or 7.38 points to 475.94.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dentsply Sirona Inc (NASDAQ:XRAY) which rose 10.19% to 38.07, Edwards Lifesciences Corp (NYSE:EW) which was up 4.01% to settle at 80.44 and Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which gained 3.64% to close at 116.15.
The worst performers were Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which was down 10.18% to 14.82 in late trade, Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE:UHS) which lost 8.41% to settle at 133.57 and DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which was down 6.48% to 11.41 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cardio Diagnostics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CDIO) which rose 158.47% to 3.45, Lionheart III Corp (NASDAQ:LION) which was up 105.63% to settle at 14.60 and Lucira Health Inc (NASDAQ:LHDX) which gained 82.35% to close at 0.93.
The worst performers were Aptinyx Inc (NASDAQ:APTX) which was down 66.78% to 0.20 in late trade, Professional Diversity Network Inc (NASDAQ:IPDN) which lost 51.20% to settle at 2.45 and BYND Cannasoft Enterprises Inc (NASDAQ:BCAN) which was down 27.27% to 2.48 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1589 to 1419 and 132 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1874 rose and 1718 declined, while 208 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.24% to 20.69.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.51% or 9.25 to $1,834.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 1.53% or 1.16 to hit $76.84 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 1.35% or 1.11 to trade at $83.15 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.28% to 1.06, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 136.16.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.28% at 104.92.
