Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Financials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.01% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.95%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 1.57% or 2.42 points to trade at 156.90 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 0.73% or 1.06 points to end at 145.94 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was down 0.10% or 0.12 points to 116.52 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 4.47% or 4.79 points to trade at 102.42 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.26% or 4.12 points to end at 177.99 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 2.23% or 6.25 points to 274.17.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which rose 2.90% to 67.80, Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which was up 2.63% to settle at 107.42 and Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which gained 2.09% to close at 104.63.
The worst performers were Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) which was down 12.32% to 13.09 in late trade, Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE:IRM) which lost 9.84% to settle at 50.65 and Generac Holdlings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which was down 6.99% to 183.49 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sobr Safe Inc (NASDAQ:SOBR) which rose 234.98% to 3.05, Powerbridge Technologies Co Ltd (NASDAQ:PBTS) which was up 60.62% to settle at 2.20 and Neurobo Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:NRBO) which gained 42.40% to close at 20.79.
The worst performers were Virios Therapeutics Llc (NASDAQ:VIRI) which was down 75.50% to 0.49 in late trade, Pagaya (NASDAQ:PGY) which lost 67.24% to settle at 2.29 and Integrated Media Technology Ltd (NASDAQ:IMTE) which was down 46.07% to 1.03 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2605 to 546 and 127 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2693 fell and 1080 advanced, while 265 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.43% to 27.16.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.29% or 4.80 to $1,673.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 1.19% or 1.02 to hit $84.34 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 1.14% or 1.05 to trade at $90.95 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.48% to 1.00, while USD/JPY rose 0.36% to 143.71.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.39% at 109.89.
