Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.01% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.64%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 0.74% or 2.28 points to trade at 311.74 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 0.60% or 1.23 points to end at 204.56 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 0.08% or 0.10 points to 123.46 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.80% or 3.35 points to trade at 116.48 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 2.47% or 2.48 points to end at 98.01 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) shed 2.42% or 5.65 points to 227.88.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which rose 4.19% to 101.48, Alphabet Inc Class C (NASDAQ:GOOG) which was up 2.68% to settle at 120.09 and Alphabet Inc Class A (NASDAQ:GOOGL) which gained 2.57% to close at 119.51.
The worst performers were Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR) which was down 6.89% to 41.38 in late trade, Gen Digital Inc (NASDAQ:GEN) which lost 5.79% to settle at 15.46 and Newell Brands Inc (NASDAQ:NWL) which was down 5.71% to 8.75 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Exela Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:XELA) which rose 103.90% to 6.28, Applied Blockchain Inc (NASDAQ:APLD) which was up 78.92% to settle at 6.11 and Missfresh Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:MF) which gained 50.29% to close at 0.82.
The worst performers were Ohmyhome Ltd (NASDAQ:OMH) which was down 79.44% to 6.35 in late trade, OncoSec Medical Inc (NASDAQ:ONCS) which lost 33.80% to settle at 0.55 and Modular Medical Inc (NASDAQ:MODD) which was down 32.01% to 0.85 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2375 to 612 and 79 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2461 fell and 1125 advanced, while 151 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.08% to 17.99.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.47% or 29.70 to $1,993.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.77% or 0.55 to hit $70.56 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.82% or 0.62 to trade at $74.61 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.12% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.19% to 136.37.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.19% at 102.46.
