Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Utilities and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.71% to hit a new 52-week low, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.51%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.51%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which fell 0.74% or 3.79 points to trade at 505.04 at the close. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) fell 0.48% or 0.15 points to end at 31.40 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was down 0.52% or 0.23 points to 43.93 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 12.81% or 12.21 points to trade at 83.12 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 3.39% or 4.25 points to end at 121.08 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 3.20% or 3.12 points to 94.33.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) which rose 3.57% to 196.80, Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:WY) which was up 2.92% to settle at 28.56 and Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) which gained 2.57% to close at 43.84.
The worst performers were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 23.31% to 7.03 in late trade, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which lost 18.04% to settle at 11.36 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which was down 13.15% to 37.90 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were FingerMotion Inc (NASDAQ:FNGR) which rose 82.16% to 3.37, SAITECH Global Corp (NASDAQ:SAI) which was up 43.36% to settle at 3.24 and Avenue Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ATXI) which gained 39.03% to close at 10.08.
The worst performers were Atlis Motor Vehicles Inc (NASDAQ:AMV) which was down 39.91% to 20.40 in late trade, Aterian Inc (NASDAQ:ATER) which lost 37.06% to settle at 1.24 and Edesa Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:EDSA) which was down 35.12% to 0.92 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1786 to 1308 and 143 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2136 fell and 1583 advanced, while 231 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.69% to 31.62.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.11% or 1.80 to $1,670.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 1.87% or 1.52 to hit $79.71 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 2.13% or 1.86 to trade at $85.32 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.08% to 0.98, while USD/JPY rose 0.23% to 144.77.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.09% at 112.10.
