Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Utilities, Financials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Basic Materials and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.23%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 6.15% or 10.57 points to trade at 182.57 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 0.94% or 1.52 points to end at 162.53 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 0.89% or 2.98 points to 336.89 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which lost 4.51% or 2.27 points to trade at 48.04 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 3.62% or 18.28 points to end at 486.20 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 2.16% or 2.18 points to 98.75.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were SVB Financial Group (OTC:SIVBQ) which rose 69.77% to 0.93, Signature Bank (OTC:SBNY) which was up 27.39% to settle at 0.19 and First Republic Bank (NYSE:FRC) which gained 12.40% to close at 14.14.
The worst performers were CDW Corp (NASDAQ:CDW) which was down 13.23% to 165.12 in late trade, Elevance Health Inc (NYSE:ELV) which lost 5.33% to settle at 457.33 and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which was down 5.20% to 14.96 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were SAITECH Global Corp (NASDAQ:SAI) which rose 67.53% to 4.20, China Jo-Jo Drugstores Inc (NASDAQ:CJJD) which was up 64.44% to settle at 1.11 and Jupiter Wellness Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:JWAC) which gained 48.51% to close at 10.47.
The worst performers were Allarity Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ALLR) which was down 43.54% to 0.65 in late trade, SMX Security Matters Ord Shs Class A (NASDAQ:SMX) which lost 34.29% to settle at 1.60 and Oblong Inc (NASDAQ:OBLG) which was down 32.17% to 2.34 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1609 to 1356 and 118 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1800 rose and 1778 declined, while 182 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.20% to 16.46 a new 52-week low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.63% or 12.70 to $2,007.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 2.19% or 1.77 to hit $79.13 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 2.06% or 1.75 to trade at $83.02 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.16% to 1.10, while USD/JPY rose 0.50% to 134.76.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.22% at 101.67.
