Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, IT and Telecoms sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.57%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Open Text Corporation (TO:OTC), which rose 22.29% or 10.86 points to trade at 59.59 at the close. Meanwhile, Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) added 13.31% or 3.78 points to end at 32.18 and Toromont Industries Ltd . (TO:TIH) was up 7.89% or 2.70 points to 36.91 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were OceanaGold Corporation (TO:OGC), which fell 19.43% or 0.550 points to trade at 2.280 at the close. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) declined 10.44% or 1.18 points to end at 10.12 and Sherritt International Corporation (TO:S) was down 10.19% or 0.16 points to 1.41.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 687 to 666 and 182 ended unchanged.
Shares in First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TO:FM) fell to 5-year lows; falling 10.44% or 1.18 to 10.12. Shares in Toromont Industries Ltd. (TO:TIH) rose to all time highs; up 7.89% or 2.70 to 36.91.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 6.54% to 13.14.
Gold for December delivery was down 0.50% or 5.50 to $1087.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.76% or 0.37 to hit $48.42 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.17% or 0.09 to trade at $53.29 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.47% to 0.7689, while CAD/EUR rose 0.03% to 0.7034.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.38% at 97.59.
