Investment Strategy

The investment seeks capital appreciation. The fund invests in a diversified, international portfolio of common stocks and other equity securities of issuers located in countries of developed and emerging markets. It invests predominantly in securities issued by companies located in countries outside the U.S., including a range of developed and emerging market countries. The fund may, however, invest up to 10% of its net assets in common stocks and other equities of companies located in the U.S.

Biography Mr. Lum is a portfolio manager in the Manager's International Growth Research Team and became a member of the International Growth Portfolio Construction Group in May 2015. Mr. Lum joined Baillie Gifford in 2006 and initially worked in the North American and Emerging Markets departments, before spending a number of years focused on investment in smaller companies. Mr. Burns has been a member of the International Growth Portfolio Construction Group since October 2012 and took over as Deputy Chair in July 2019. Mr. Burns is also a co-manager of the International Concentrated Growth Strategy. He has also spent time working in both the Emerging Markets and U.K. Equity Departments. Mr. Burns graduated BA in Geography from the University of Cambridge in 2009. Mr. Burns has been a member of the team since 2012.

Biography James graduated BA in History from Oxford University and after postgraduate study in Italy and Canada he gained an MA in International Affairs in 1982. He is a Trustee of the Johns Hopkins University. He joined Baillie Gifford in 1983 and became a Partner in 1987. He headed our European Equity team until 2003 when he founded our Long Term Global Growth strategy. He has Chaired the EAFE Alpha Portfolio Group since its inception in 2003 and has been the Manager and then Joint Manager of Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust since 2000. In 2015 James became the Chair of our newly formed Equity Improvement Group. He has also served as a member of the Advisory Board of the government sponsored Kay Review and as Chair of the subsequent industry working group that set up the UK Investor Forum.

Biography Kavé joined Baillie Gifford in 1999. He is head of research for the UK Equity Team, and Chair of the firm’s Investment Risk Committee. He initially worked on the European Small and Mid-Cap Team before moving to the UK Team in 2002. Kavé joined the International Growth Portfolio Construction Group in 2005 and went on to set up a dedicated research team for that group in 2011. He became a Partner in 2012 and returned to the UK Team in 2019.

Biography Sarah graduated BA in Experimental Psychology from Oxford University in 1980. She joined Baillie Gifford in the same year, become a member of the Japanese team in 1982 and head of the department in 2001. Sarah is the longest standing partner within the firm, having been appointed in 1986. She is the lead manager for the Japan Investment Trust as well as co-manager for the Japanese All Cap strategy. Sarah is also a member of the EAFE Alpha Portfolio Construction Group.
Nicholas Thomas Director 2008 2017
Biography Nick Thomas, Director, Institutional Clients Department and Portfolio Manager. Mr. Thomas graduated BA in Classics from Cambridge University in 1998. He joined Baillie Gifford in the same year and worked as a Portfolio Manager in our Developed Asia Equities Investment Team. Since 2009, he has also been responsible for servicing clients in North America. Mr. Thomas received his CFA charter in 2003. He became a Partner in 2010.
