Investing.com – Australia stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Energy, Resources and Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 declined 1.00%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Altium Ltd (AX:ALU), which rose 12.17% or 0.600 points to trade at 5.530 at the close. Meanwhile, Beach Energy Ltd (AX:BPT) added 4.05% or 0.015 points to end at 0.385 and Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd (AX:LNG) was up 4.03% or 0.025 points to 0.645 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were AWE Ltd (AX:AWE), which fell 9.28% or 0.045 points to trade at 0.440 at the close. Ten Network Holdings Ltd (AX:TEN) declined 6.52% or 0.075 points to end at 1.075 and Challenger Ltd (AX:CGF) was down 6.46% or 0.520 points to 7.530.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Australia Stock Exchange by 563 to 428 and 157 ended unchanged.
Shares in Altium Ltd (AX:ALU) rose to 3-years highs; gaining 12.17% or 0.600 to 5.530.
The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 2.48% to 20.508.
Gold for April delivery was down 0.19% or 2.10 to $1125.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.69% or 0.54 to hit $31.09 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.71% or 0.58 to trade at $33.66 a barrel.
AUD/USD was down 0.51% to 0.7076, while AUD/JPY fell 0.81% to 85.39.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.02% at 99.03.
