Proactive Investors - Business jet manufacturer Bombardier (TSX:BBDb) and defense contractor General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) Mission Systems-Canada have announced a collaboration to deliver a next-generation multi-mission and anti-submarine aircraft which will meet the requirements set by the Canadian government for the Canadian Multi-Mission Aircraft (CMMA) program.
The two companies plan to combine Bombardier (TSX:BBD.B)’s Global 6500 aircraft, a jet with long range, high endurance, and improved fuel efficiency, with General Dynamics (NYSE:GD)’ interoperable mission system technology and sessions into one platform.
The platform will put Canada at the forefront of next-generation multi-mission and anti-submarine warfare as both an operator and allied exporter, according to the two companies.
“Having Bombardier work on CMMA is the right choice from an aircraft performance standpoint, and also, an opportunity for Canada to foster innovation, bolster its capabilities and support talent across Canada’s aerospace industry from coast to coast to coast,” commented Bombardier Defense executive vice president of aircraft sales Jean-Christophe Gallagher.
General Dynamics vice president and general manager of mission systems international Joel Houde added: “This new partnership unlocks a generational opportunity to couple our leading edge, trusted mission systems to ultimately provide a made-in-Canada solution that supports Canada’s multi-mission airborne needs into the future while creating a readily exportable capability that will benefit Canada in so many other ways.”
Bombardier’s Toronto-listed shares added 3.3% to C$59.81 while General Dynamics was trading flat at US$211.41 on the NYSE following the announcement.
