Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Mining, Healthcare and Energy sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE), which rose 8.79% or 0.58 points to trade at 7.18 at the close. MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) added 8.73% or 0.53 points to end at 6.60 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) was up 7.89% or 0.65 points to 8.89 in late trade.
Biggest losers included IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG), which lost 4.38% or 0.250 points to trade at 5.460 in late trade. Novagold Resources Inc . (TO:NG) declined 4.26% or 0.35 points to end at 7.86 and Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD) shed 4.11% or 0.24 points to 5.60.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 882 to 273 and 121 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 18.98% to 16.22.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.79% or 10.40 to $1314.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 3.30% or 1.53 to hit $47.86 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 3.04% or 1.45 to trade at $49.22 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.30% to 0.7672, while CAD/EUR fell 0.23% to 0.6921.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.46% at 96.11.
