Decades ago, it was thought that furniture would resist e-commerce because of the logistical challenges of shipping large furniture, but now you can buy a mattress online and get it in a box a few days later; so just like other retailers, furniture stores need to adapt to new realities and consumer behaviors.Sales Growth

Any business can put up a good quarter or two, but the best consistently grow over the long haul.Sleep Number is a small retailer, which sometimes brings disadvantages compared to larger competitors that benefit from economies of scale.

Same-Store SalesA company's store base only paints one part of the picture. When demand is high, it makes sense to open more. But when demand is low, it’s prudent to close some locations and use the money in other ways. Same-store sales is an industry measure of whether revenue is growing at those existing stores and is driven by customer visits (often called traffic) and the average spending per customer (ticket).
Sleep Number’s demand within its existing locations has barely increased over the last two years as its same-store sales were flat. This performance isn’t ideal, and we’d be skeptical if Sleep Number starts opening new stores to artifically boost revenue growth.
In the latest quarter, Sleep Number’s same-store sales fell by 10% annually. This decline was a reversal from the 1% year-on-year increase it posted 12 months ago. We’ll keep a close eye on the company to see if this turns into a longer-term trend.
