Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Materials, IT and Energy sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.28%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Newalta Corporation (TO:NAL), which rose 9.16% or 0.46 points to trade at 5.48 at the close. Meanwhile, Canadian Apartment Properties REIT (TO:CAR_u) added 8.12% or 2.06 points to end at 27.44 and Badger Daylighting Ltd . (TO:BAD) was up 6.79% or 1.59 points to 25.00 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Pengrowth Energy Corporation (TO:PGF), which fell 10.77% or 0.14 points to trade at 1.16 at the close. Barrick Gold Corporation (TO:ABX) declined 8.65% or 0.88 points to end at 9.29 and Pan American Silver Corp (TO:PAA) was down 8.41% or 0.79 points to 8.60.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 802 to 598 and 152 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.13% to 21.12.
Gold for December delivery was down 1.38% or 15.00 to $1068.60 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.02% or 0.84 to hit $40.90 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.68% or 0.75 to trade at $43.81 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.15% to 0.7512, while CAD/EUR rose 0.51% to 0.7055.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.23% at 99.70.
