Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare, Consumer Discretionary and Energy sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 2.13% to hit a new 6-months low.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Alamos Gold Inc (TO:AGI), which rose 9.96% or 0.54 points to trade at 5.96 at the close. Meanwhile, Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TO:FVI) added 8.36% or 0.31 points to end at 4.02 and Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR) was up 8.30% or 0.24 points to 3.13 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI), which fell 10.38% or 0.22 points to trade at 1.90 at the close. Calfrac Well Services Ltd . (TO:CFW) declined 8.83% or 0.43 points to end at 4.44 and Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP) was down 8.04% or 0.30 points to 3.43.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 905 to 475 and 171 ended unchanged.
Shares in Calfrac Well Services Ltd. (TO:CFW) fell to 5-year lows; losing 8.83% or 0.43 to 4.44. Shares in Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR) rose to 52-week highs; up 8.30% or 0.24 to 3.13. Shares in Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP) fell to 5-year lows; down 8.04% or 0.30 to 3.43.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 18.33% to 21.17 a new 6-months high.
Gold for December delivery was up 2.14% or 24.10 to $1152.00 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 1.36% or 0.56 to hit $40.71 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 2.27% or 1.07 to trade at $46.09 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.37% to 0.7646, while CAD/EUR fell 0.70% to 0.6802.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.70% at 95.75.
