BRUSSELS, March 9 (Reuters) - The European Union is not a threat to the security of the United States and expects to be excluded from the steel tariffs set by U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said.
"We have claimed all the time that Europe is certainly not a threat to American internal security so we expect to be excluded," Malmstrom said on the sidelines of a conference in Brussels.
"We expect clarity about what the president said, we still are of the view that this decision is not good, is not good for the global economy," she added.
Trump pressed ahead on Thursday with import tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent for aluminium but exempted Canada and Mexico and offered the possibility of excluding other allies, backtracking from an earlier "no-exceptions" stance.
