Investing.com -- The Canadian government, as part of its spring budget commitments, has initiated a grocery rebate program to assist citizens battling food inflation. This scheme is designed specifically for those who are eligible for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) credit.
According to the Canada Revenue Agency, this aid will reach approximately 11 million Canadians as an additional benefit over their regular GST credit payment.
In terms of monetary value, families composed of two adults and two children can anticipate an extra sum up to $467. Single Canadians without dependents may receive up to an added amount of $234 while seniors could see an average increase by $225 in their benefits.
This isn't the first time that such measures have been taken by federal authorities. Last fall also saw similar payments being rolled out with the objective to alleviate high-inflation consequences on low-earning and moderate-income households.
Grocery prices remained 9% higher than this time last year, even as broader inflation continues to cool.
