Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy, Mining and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.99%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Alamos Gold Inc (TO:AGI), which rose 9.01% or 0.31 points to trade at 3.75 at the close. Meanwhile, Barrick Gold Corporation (TO:ABX) added 8.88% or 1.08 points to end at 13.24 and Detour Gold Corporation (TO:DGC) was up 7.80% or 1.18 points to 16.30 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Ensign Energy Services Inc . (TO:ESI), which fell 12.90% or 0.89 points to trade at 6.01 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) declined 12.68% or 0.35 points to end at 2.41 and Whitecap Resources Inc . (TO:WCP) was down 12.33% or 0.98 points to 6.97.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 778 to 546 and 173 ended unchanged.
Shares in Ensign Energy Services Inc. (TO:ESI) fell to 5-year lows; down 12.90% or 0.89 to 6.01.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.36% to 26.53.
Gold for February delivery was up 1.17% or 12.80 to $1109.10 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 7.67% or 2.47 to hit $29.72 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 5.95% or 1.96 to trade at $30.89 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 1.12% to 0.7006, while CAD/EUR fell 1.59% to 0.6457.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.27% at 99.33.
