Investing.com-- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation by as soon as Monday, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday, amid increasing pressure from his party to quit.
The Globe and Mail cited three unnamed sources for the report, stating that Trudeau’s exit will happen before a key liberal caucus meeting on Wednesday. It was not clear whether Trudeau will stay on as prime minister until a new leader is selected.
Trudeau’s potential exit comes amid growing calls from the Liberal Party for his resignation, with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland having recently stepped down due to disagreements over policy.
Recent polls showed the Liberal party is also set for a crushing loss against the Conservatives in an election that will be held by October 2025.
Trudeau’s resignation is also expected to spur increased calls for a snap election, which will select an administration that will deal with U.S. President Donald Trump over the next four years.
The Globe and Mail report said Trudeau had discussed having Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc step in as interim prime minister, although this will not be possible if LeBlanc also pursues Trudeau’s leadership of the Liberal party.
