MONTREAL, June 30 (Reuters) - Canada on Friday proposed rules to ensure airline crews are fit for duty and well rested, such as raising the current prohibition on flight members from working after drinking alcohol from eight hours to 12.
Transport Minister Marc Garneau said in a news release that the draft rules would include flight duty period limits that take into account the time of day, increase rest periods, and add requirements to ensure crew have free time.
The rules would ensure commercial pilots throughout the airline industry get enough rest, and would be based on scientific evidence on fatigue.
Transport Canada has been studying the issue since 2010.
Garneau's proposed changes are expected to have limited impact on major Canadian carriers, which already have similar guidelines in place.
The public will be able to comment on the draft rules until Sept. 29.
