Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Consumer Discretionary, Materials and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.46%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were TransAlta Corp (TSX:TA), which rose 6.63% or 0.53 points to trade at 8.52 at the close. Alacer Gold Corp (TSX:ASR) added 5.32% or 0.230 points to end at 4.550 and Semafo Inc . (TSX:SMF) was up 4.67% or 0.23 points to 5.16 in late trade.
Biggest losers included TORC Oil & Gas Ltd. (TSX:TOG), which lost 3.08% or 0.13 points to trade at 4.09 in late trade. Seven Generations Energy Ltd (TSX:VII) declined 3.02% or 0.20 points to end at 6.42 and Air Canada (TSX:AC) shed 2.24% or 0.910 points to 39.690.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 768 to 304 and 110 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.89% to 11.75.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.04% or 0.50 to $1412.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 2.07% or 1.23 to hit $58.20 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.95% or 1.28 to trade at $64.39 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.03% to 0.7638, while CAD/EUR rose 0.05% to 0.6720.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.01% at 95.730.
