Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the IT, Consumer Discretionary and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.51%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were New Gold Inc (TO:NGD), which rose 6.67% or 0.080 points to trade at 1.280 at the close. Laurentian Bank Of Canada (TO:LB) added 6.27% or 2.48 points to end at 42.01 and Aphria Inc (TO:APHA) was up 5.70% or 0.460 points to 8.530 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Maxar Technologies Inc (TO:MAXR), which lost 32.61% or 5.14 points to trade at 10.62 in late trade. Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd (TO:KL) declined 4.73% or 1.645 points to end at 33.105 and Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) shed 4.26% or 0.13 points to 2.92.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 753 to 368 and 94 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.75% to 22.37.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.32% or 4.10 to $1289.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.54% or 0.74 to hit $48.70 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.88% or 0.50 to trade at $57.56 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.61% to 0.7520, while CAD/EUR fell 0.09% to 0.6554.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.53% at 95.243.
