Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Materials, Consumer Discretionary and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.73%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were HudBay Minerals Inc (TO:HBM), which rose 22.63% or 1.17 points to trade at 6.34 at the close. Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TO:TRQ) added 16.22% or 0.360 points to end at 2.580 and Centerra Gold Inc (TO:CG) was up 10.89% or 0.56 points to 5.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Encana Corporation (TO:ECA), which lost 12.20% or 1.64 points to trade at 11.80 in late trade. TransAlta Renewables Inc. (TO:RNW) declined 5.53% or 0.60 points to end at 10.25 and AltaGas Ltd (TO:ALA) shed 4.05% or 0.67 points to 15.88.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 784 to 357 and 85 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.55% to 18.75.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.87% or 22.70 to $1235.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.74% or 1.79 to hit $63.52 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 3.63% or 2.74 to trade at $72.73 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.47% to 0.7637, while CAD/EUR fell 0.39% to 0.6693.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.83% at 96.10.
