Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the IT, Materials and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.78%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which rose 7.63% or 65.82 points to trade at 928.96 at the close. Centerra Gold Inc (TSX:CG) added 6.83% or 0.80 points to end at 12.52 and Canfor Corporation (TSX:CFP) was up 6.52% or 0.59 points to 9.64 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chorus Aviation Inc (TSX:CHR), which lost 10.00% or 0.34 points to trade at 3.06 in late trade. Air Canada (TSX:AC) declined 8.65% or 1.67 points to end at 17.63 and Celestica Inc. (TSX:CLS) shed 8.34% or 0.71 points to 7.80.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 586 to 448 and 115 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.65% or 11.00 to $1711.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 7.99% or 1.58 to hit $21.36 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 5.79% or 1.53 to trade at $27.97 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.04% to 0.7095, while CAD/EUR rose 0.67% to 0.6508.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.51% at 99.605.
