Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the IT, Healthcare and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.49%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which rose 11.57% or 1.36 points to trade at 13.11 at the close. Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX:LSPD) added 9.57% or 3.53 points to end at 40.43 and Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) was up 8.68% or 96.64 points to 1210.62 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cascades Inc . (TSX:CAS), which lost 4.99% or 0.67 points to trade at 12.77 in late trade. Methanex Corporation (TSX:MX) declined 2.99% or 1.78 points to end at 57.77 and K92 Mining Inc (TSX:KNT) shed 2.70% or 0.17 points to 6.29.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 784 to 253 and 88 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.99% to 23.32.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.68% or 12.10 to $1797.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.65% or 1.43 to hit $88.25 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.99% or 0.88 to trade at $89.40 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.47% to 0.7869, while CAD/EUR fell 0.39% to 0.6999.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.73% at 96.560.
