Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 1.22%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Intertain Group (TO:IT), which rose 4.36% or 0.35 points to trade at 8.38 at the close. North West Company Inc . (TO:NWC) added 3.87% or 1.01 points to end at 27.11 and CCL Industries Inc (TO:CCLb) was up 2.11% or 4.72 points to 228.03 in late trade.
Biggest losers included IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG), which lost 8.49% or 0.440 points to trade at 4.740 in late trade. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) declined 7.96% or 0.57 points to end at 6.59 and Guyana Goldfields Inc . (TO:GUY) shed 7.18% or 0.380 points to 4.910.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 789 to 420 and 119 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 13.24% to 6.49 a new all time low.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was down 1.25% or 14.50 to $1144.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 3.94% or 2.09 to hit $50.89 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 3.45% or 1.92 to trade at $53.80 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.88% to 0.7539, while CAD/EUR fell 0.20% to 0.7153.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.98% at 102.07.
