Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Financials, Oil & Gas and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.20%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.31%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.58%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 0.87% or 1.12 points to trade at 130.41 at the close. E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD) added 0.84% or 0.67 points to end at 80.47 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 0.28% or 0.25 points to 89.03 in late trade.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 1.28% or 1.12 points to trade at 86.19 in late trade. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) declined 1.23% or 0.41 points to end at 33.00 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 0.94% or 1.64 points to 172.88.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Under Armour Inc C (NYSE:UA) which rose 3.00% to 18.560, Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) which was up 2.86% to settle at 85.34 and Staples Inc (NASDAQ:SPLS) which gained 2.63% to close at 9.76.
The worst performers were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was down 3.32% to 6.110 in late trade, Bed Bath & Beyond Inc (NASDAQ:BBBY) which lost 3.03% to settle at 37.80 and Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was down 2.91% to 8.34 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG) which rose 73.08% to 2.250, China Auto Logistics Inc (NASDAQ:CALI) which was up 41.75% to settle at 4.040 and Liberty Interactive Corp B (NASDAQ:LVNTB) which gained 26.88% to close at 52.020.
The worst performers were Unilife Corp (NASDAQ:UNIS) which was down 75.25% to 0.3094 in late trade, Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:SHIP) which lost 21.81% to settle at 0.860 and TOP SHIPS Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which was down 20.83% to 0.8550 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2100 to 1123 and 36 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1853 fell and 669 advanced, while 109 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 9.33% to 12.89.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.03% or 0.35 to $1258.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.31% or 0.16 to hit $50.87 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.15% or 0.08 to trade at $54.09 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.0674, while USD/JPY fell 0.12% to 110.62.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 100.37.
