Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Mining and Consumer Staples sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.64%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Parex Resources Inc (TO:PXT), which rose 12.97% or 1.300 points to trade at 11.320 at the close. Meanwhile, NuVista Energy Ltd . (TO:NVA) added 12.39% or 0.580 points to end at 5.260 and Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) was up 11.80% or 0.21 points to 1.99 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Concordia Healthcare (TO:CXR), which fell 6.26% or 2.48 points to trade at 37.14 at the close. Primero Mining Corp (TO:P) declined 5.26% or 0.160 points to end at 2.880 and Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI) was down 4.48% or 0.13 points to 2.77.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 729 to 641 and 186 ended unchanged.
Shares in Parex Resources Inc (TO:PXT) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 12.97% or 1.300 to 11.320.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.71% to 18.96.
Gold for December delivery was down 1.64% or 18.60 to $1117.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 3.38% or 1.56 to hit $47.70 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 3.17% or 1.54 to trade at $50.34 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.28% to 0.7658, while CAD/EUR rose 0.74% to 0.6984.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.25% at 97.24.
