Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Mining, Energy and Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.71%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR), which rose 4.23% or 0.25 points to trade at 6.16 at the close. Meanwhile, BRP Inc. (TO:DOO) added 4.15% or 1.13 points to end at 28.33 and Cott Corporation (TO:BCB) was up 3.73% or 0.54 points to 15.02 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Trican Well Service Ltd . (TO:TCW), which fell 13.54% or 0.31 points to trade at 1.98 at the close. Intertape Polymer Group Inc . (TO:ITP) declined 13.34% or 2.33 points to end at 15.13 and Black Diamond Group Limited (TO:BDI) was down 11.00% or 1.40 points to 11.33.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 786 to 526 and 174 ended unchanged.
Shares in Trican Well Service Ltd. (TO:TCW) fell to 5-year lows; down 13.54% or 0.31 to 1.98.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.64% to 16.24.
Gold for December delivery was down 0.84% or 9.40 to $1114.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.46% or 1.06 to hit $42.23 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.08% or 0.54 to trade at $49.64 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.57% to 0.7658, while CAD/EUR fell 0.57% to 0.6862.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.07% at 96.35.
