Investing.com – U.K. stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Pharmaceuticals & Biotech, Mining and Chemicals sectors led shares lower.
At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 fell 0.66% to hit a new 3-years low.
The best performers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Whitbread PLC (L:WTB), which rose 1.92% or 79.00 points to trade at 4199.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Sage Group PLC (L:SGE) added 1.82% or 10.50 points to end at 588.00 and Carnival PLC (L:CCL) was up 1.70% or 64.00 points to 3837.00 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Shire PLC (L:SHP), which fell 8.23% or 352.00 points to trade at 3925.00 at the close. Sports Direct International PLC (L:SPD) declined 6.99% or 30.300 points to end at 403.000 and Glencore PLC (L:GLEN) was down 5.23% or 4.0500 points to 73.4300.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the London Stock Exchange by 1471 to 747 and 388 ended unchanged.
Shares in Shire PLC (L:SHP) fell to 52-week lows; losing 8.23% or 352.00 to 3925.00. Shares in Sports Direct International PLC (L:SPD) fell to 52-week lows; falling 6.99% or 30.300 to 403.000.
Gold for February delivery was up 0.05% or 0.50 to $1098.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 4.61% or 1.53 to hit $31.63 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 5.39% or 1.83 to trade at $32.10 a barrel.
GBP/USD was up 0.30% to 1.4567, while EUR/GBP fell 0.66% to 0.7474.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.24% at 98.69.
