Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Mining, Energy and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.91%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG), which rose 8.05% or 0.52 points to trade at 6.98 at the close. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) added 5.25% or 0.49 points to end at 9.83 and Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (TO:POT) was up 5.14% or 1.09 points to 22.28 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldcorp Inc. (TO:G), which lost 3.11% or 0.72 points to trade at 22.46 in late trade. B2Gold Corp (TO:BTO) declined 2.80% or 0.080 points to end at 2.780 and Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI) shed 2.52% or 0.16 points to 6.18.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 764 to 347 and 164 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 15.72% to 15.06.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.79% or 10.00 to $1260.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 2.02% or 0.99 to hit $50.12 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 2.13% or 1.06 to trade at $50.94 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.50% to 0.7824, while CAD/EUR fell 0.39% to 0.6865.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.55% at 93.29.
