Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Technology, Telecoms and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.99%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.47%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 3.44% or 3.84 points to trade at 115.61 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 2.70% or 0.96 points to end at 36.58 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 1.69% or 0.95 points to 57.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Company (NYSE:BA), which added 0.07% or 0.09 points to trade at 127.76 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 0.28% or 0.26 points to end at 92.52 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) gained 0.35% or 0.23 points to 66.63.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SWKS) which rose 6.32% to 76.97, Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc (NYSE:DO) which was up 5.57% to settle at 15.62 and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NASDAQ:GT) which gained 5.19% to close at 32.41.
The worst performers were VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which was down 3.20% to 56.18 in late trade, Monsanto Company (NYSE:MON) which lost 2.46% to settle at 104.13 and Ulta Salon Cosmetics & Fragrance (NASDAQ:ULTA) which was down 1.78% to 233.04 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Glori Energy Technology Inc (NASDAQ:GLRI) which rose 56.33% to 0.1296, Aerie Pharmace (NASDAQ:AERI) which was up 44.53% to settle at 30.54 and Tokai Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:TKAI) which gained 25.49% to close at 1.28.
The worst performers were Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which was down 37.98% to 0.0717 in late trade, Acasti Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:ACST) which lost 21.36% to settle at 2.210 and Northwest Biotherapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:NWBO) which was down 18.48% to 0.422 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2319 to 832 and 90 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1846 rose and 666 declined, while 98 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 10.80% to 16.18.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.77% or 10.15 to $1315.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 0.41% or 0.18 to hit $43.76 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.18% or 0.54 to trade at $46.39 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.06% to 1.1242, while USD/JPY fell 0.28% to 102.14.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.04% at 95.29.
