Investing.com-- Vice President Kamala Harris was seen widening her lead over Republican nominee Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race after she was officially named as the Democratic Presidential candidate, an IPSOS poll showed.

Harris holds an approval rating of 42%, compared to Trump’s 37% approval, the Ipsos poll showed. The poll showed Harris had widened her lead after a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed her leading Trump 37% to 34% in late-July.

However, when respondents who did not support either Trump or Harris were asked to pick between the two, Trump led Harris by 49% to 35%. In a combined base of registered voters and of respondents who were pushed to pick between the two, Harris held a small lead over Trump at 49% to 47%, the Ipsos poll showed.

The poll covered 1,604 adults and was conducted between August 2-7. It has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.

The poll comes just days after Harris was officially nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate, and picked Minnesota governor Tim Walz as her running mate.

Harris entered the race in late-July after President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid amid growing concerns over his health, and endorsed Harris.

She was seen swiftly gaining support within the Democratic party, and was officially nominated as the party’s presidential candidate in an online roll call held earlier this week.

Harris was also seen polling much better against Trump than Biden, especially after the President’s approval tumbled in the wake of a disastrous performance in a debate with Trump.

But despite Harris’ lead over Trump, the Ipsos poll found Americans were more inclined towards Trump when it came to key elections topics such as immigration and the economy.

Americans also associated Trump with being "weird," "patriotic," and "brave," while Harris was seen as "intelligent" and "moral."
