Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, IT and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Hudson's Bay Company (TSX:HBC), which rose 9.72% or 0.96 points to trade at 10.84 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TSX:BTE) added 7.18% or 0.14 points to end at 2.09 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) was up 6.52% or 0.660 points to 10.790 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Hexo Corp (TSX:HEXO), which lost 7.32% or 0.1500 points to trade at 1.9000 in late trade. Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX:ACB) declined 5.38% or 0.140 points to end at 2.460 and Cronos Group Inc (TSX:CRON) shed 5.16% or 0.4800 points to 8.8200.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 547 to 511 and 121 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0.00% to 12.68.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.02% or 15.85 to $1568.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.38% or 0.24 to hit $62.81 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.22% or 0.15 to trade at $68.45 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.25% to 0.7715, while CAD/EUR rose 0.02% to 0.6892.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.19% at 96.333.
