Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.40% to hit a new 1-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were NexGen Energy Ltd. (TO:NXE), which rose 8.27% or 0.210 points to trade at 2.750 at the close. Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD) added 7.50% or 0.09 points to end at 1.29 and Russel Metals Inc . (TO:RUS) was up 5.84% or 1.69 points to 30.64 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Maple Leaf Foods Inc . (TO:MFI), which lost 5.72% or 1.74 points to trade at 28.66 in late trade. Cineplex Inc . (TO:CGX) declined 4.56% or 1.34 points to end at 28.05 and Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) shed 4.20% or 0.62 points to 14.14.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 694 to 404 and 128 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.42% to 14.35.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.08% or 1.10 to $1305.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.71% or 0.48 to hit $67.73 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.01% or 0.01 to trade at $73.12 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.26% to 0.7763, while CAD/EUR rose 0.14% to 0.6500.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.37% at 92.62.
