Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Healthcare, Materials and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.54% to hit a new 1-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canopy Growth Corp (TO:WEED), which rose 8.62% or 5.090 points to trade at 64.110 at the close. New Gold Inc (TO:NGD) added 7.14% or 0.100 points to end at 1.500 and Interfor Corp (TO:IFP) was up 7.10% or 1.18 points to 17.80 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Ensign Energy Services Inc (TO:ESI), which lost 2.76% or 0.14 points to trade at 4.94 in late trade. ShawCor Ltd . (TO:SCL) declined 2.67% or 0.53 points to end at 19.34 and CI Financial Corp (TO:CIX) shed 2.65% or 0.49 points to 18.00.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 755 to 335 and 113 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.36% to 16.70 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.73% or 22.15 to $1301.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.83% or 0.44 to hit $53.57 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.70% or 0.43 to trade at $61.52 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.95% to 0.7561, while CAD/EUR rose 0.00% to 0.6624.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.89% at 95.440.
