Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy, IT and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Methanex Corporation (TO:MX), which rose 6.87% or 5.27 points to trade at 81.96 at the close. IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) added 4.02% or 0.170 points to end at 4.400 and Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG) was up 3.73% or 0.40 points to 11.11 in late trade.
Biggest losers included MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG), which lost 6.12% or 0.34 points to trade at 5.22 in late trade. Enbridge Inc. (TO:ENB) declined 5.78% or 2.86 points to end at 46.65 and Cenovus Energy Inc (TO:CVE) shed 5.67% or 0.69 points to 11.47.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 607 to 488 and 111 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.23% to 13.15.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.07% or 0.85 to $1288.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 0.04% or 0.02 to hit $56.47 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.05% or 0.03 to trade at $65.59 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.05% to 0.7511, while CAD/EUR fell 0.02% to 0.6625.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 96.535.
