Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Consumer Staples and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were SNC-Lavalin Group Inc . (TSX:SNC), which rose 18.99% or 4.58 points to trade at 28.70 at the close. Parex Resources Inc (TSX:PXT) added 3.30% or 0.730 points to end at 22.870 and TransAlta Corp (TSX:TA) was up 3.04% or 0.27 points to 9.15 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Hexo Corp (TSX:HEXO), which lost 8.30% or 0.2300 points to trade at 2.5400 in late trade. Aphria Inc (TSX:APHA) declined 7.19% or 0.485 points to end at 6.265 and Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX:ACB) shed 7.14% or 0.220 points to 2.860.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 591 to 483 and 108 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.39% to 13.48.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.11% or 1.65 to $1478.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.02% or 0.01 to hit $60.88 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.15% or 0.10 to trade at $66.20 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.39% to 0.7628, while CAD/EUR rose 0.74% to 0.6864.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.19% at 96.960.
