Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Energy, Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.32%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (TO:MAXR), which rose 6.08% or 4.02 points to trade at 70.09 at the close. Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD) added 3.79% or 0.05 points to end at 1.37 and Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) was up 3.59% or 0.180 points to 5.190 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Centerra Gold Inc (TO:CG), which lost 9.16% or 0.69 points to trade at 6.84 in late trade. Tahoe Resources Inc (TO:THO) declined 6.17% or 0.42 points to end at 6.39 and Encana Corporation (TO:ECA) shed 3.64% or 0.63 points to 16.69.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 565 to 516 and 118 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 8.67% to 14.16 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.36% or 4.50 to $1258.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.50% or 1.11 to hit $73.03 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.73% or 0.57 to trade at $77.67 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.04% to 0.7605, while CAD/EUR fell 0.29% to 0.6510.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.04% at 94.15.
